1" Scale, 4-3/4" Gauge Baltimore & Ohio I-6 Class 4-4-0 "American" by H.J. Coventry


An 1890s-vintage American, designed in the late 1950s by Mr. Coventry (and off the market for about 5 decades), is now available. Critical castings are available below, & all other castings are in development.

This is a mockup of the locomotive with some of the iron castings, plus the cab, the dome, and the tender bed. The pilot (cowcatcher) is available and is shown in the photo below. (Boiler shell shown for clarity only and is not included). The 5" O.D. boiler shell can be rolled from sheet, or bought from Reeves in the United Kingdom.

HJ Coventry live steam castings
Here's an example of the quality of the castings available from FRIENDS YANKEE SHOP MODELS. At left, a steam dome and dome cover as sold by Mr. H.J. Coventry in the early 1970s. This was from one of the last, if not THE last, set of 1" scale 4-4-0 castings that Mr. Coventry sold. The steam dome is the correct size, but the cap was poured from a pattern that had double shrinkage, thus the cap appears too big for the dome. When redeveloping this design, I made a new pattern that had the correct shrinkage and machining allowance, as well as a chucking spigot to make machining easier.
